» » » » Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh pays tribute to Luhitkantha Zubeen Garg Urges Government to Name Samadhi Xetra as ‘Zubeen Nagar’


Guwahati, September 21:Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP) the national social organisation of Gorkhas in India organised a heartfelt tribute programme in memory of Luhitkantha Zubeen Garg at its Assam State Office, Hari Prasad ‘Gorkha’ Rai Bhawan, Devkotanagar, Maligaon, Guwahati, on Saturday evening.

The solemn programme was planned in the evening to coincide with the arrival of Zubeen’s mortal remains in his homeland. Residents of Devkotanagar, leaders of the All Assam Gorkha Students' Union (AAGSU), Assam Gorkha Sammelan (AGS), Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha (ANSS), members of the local youth club, and Zubeen Garg Fan Club joined BGP leaders in paying their respects.

A life-size photograph of the legendary singer was adorned with fresh floral garlands, while earthen lamps, candles, and incense sticks were lit in his memory.

Addressing media persons, Amar Adhikari, President, BGP Assam State Committee, said,  “Zubeen is the eternal voice of the Brahmaputra we will forever remember him as Luhitantha alike Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika. Beyond being a legendary people’s artist with over 40,000 songs to his credit, he was also a true humanist and an environmentalist. His contributions in Assamese as well as in Gorkha Bhasa continue to inspire, and on behalf of Gorkhas across the nation, BGP pays homage to the legend.”

Speaking on the occasion, Nanda Kirati Dewan, General Secretary, BGP Assam from Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium Sarusajai where Zubeen's body is kept for public tribute made a special appeal to the Government of Assam, “We request the government to name the place of Zubeen Garg’s cremation as 'Zubeen Nagar' and to build a state-of-the-art, tech-enabled cultural infrastructure that digitally archives his 40,000 songs and immortalises his famous quotes. Such an initiative will be a true tribute to Zubeen Da, ensuring his life and works remain timeless.”

Further, Dewan suggested a befitting international recognition,  “We appeal to the Government of Assam and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India to name the International Terminal of Lok Priya Gopinath International Airport as 'Zubeen Garg International Terminal.' Additionally, a life-size statue of the legend should be installed at the airport frontage, symbolising how the legend Zubeen  carried the identity of Assam to the global stage.”

Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha advisor Durga Khatiwara, senior literary figure Naba Sapcota, BGP Kamrup Metro District President Jagdish Gahatraj, General Secretary Durga Devi Thapa, AAGSU leader Siddhant Adhikari were prominent personalities of the locality present. The evening concluded with prayers for the departed soul and collective remembrance of Zubeen Garg’s unparalleled contribution to music, culture, and humanity.

Assam's hearthrob Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on 19th September due to a seizure attack while swimming at the Lazarus uninhabited island in southern Singapore. He had gone three with office bearers of Assam Association Singapore and his band manager, members and cousin Sandipan Garg. Zubeen was in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival in Singapore organised by Shyam Kanu Mahanta and company. Multiple FIR have been registered against organiser and band manager for  Zubeen's sudden and untimely careless death due to security and health concerns negligence.
