IMPHAL: Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Anurag Bajpai, announced that a Sangai Conservation cum Breeding Centre has been established at Keibul Lamjao to conserve and increase the population of Sangai, the State Animal of Manipur, which is found only in the wild in this region.

The announcement was made during a Wildlife Photography Exhibition held at Nupi Lal Complex, Imphal, as part of the ongoing Wildlife Week Celebration. Addressing the gathering as the Chief Guest, Anurag Bajpai highlighted the importance of this initiative for the future of Sangai and other endangered wildlife species in the state.

He emphasized that the exhibition, along with various other activities organized by the Forest Department, is aimed at documenting and showcasing Manipur’s unique natural heritage. These efforts also include campaigns to protect the state’s rich biodiversity of wild animals and birds.

Among the initiatives, he revealed that plans are underway to develop a Bird Sanctuary over 227 hectares at Kharung Pat in Kakching District. Additionally, a Rescue Centre for wild birds is also being set up in Bishnupur.

Further, similar wildlife conservation centres are being planned in Jiribam, Kamjong, and Ukhrul, particularly focusing on preserving the bird species found in hilly and forested regions.

The exhibition featured over 100 photographs of various bird species captured in their natural habitats across the state.

It was also announced that the Grand Finale of Wildlife Week Celebration will be held on October 9 at City Convention Centre, Imphal.
