The solemn observance was attended by leaders of the Zeliangrong Civil Organizations, members of the Park Committee, family members, relatives, former leaders of ZCOs, colony leaders, and well-wishers.
Late Athuan Abonmai, former President of the Zeliangrong Baudi of Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland, was a respected and visionary leader. He was assassinated on 22nd September 2021, after being abducted while attending a state government–sponsored programme at Tamenglong District Headquarters, an event attended by VVIPs including the Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, MLAs, bureaucrats, and top security officials. He was killed by miscreants suspected to be from the NSCN-IM.
During the anniversary observance, leaders of ZCOs, the Park Committee, family members, and well-wishers expressed gratitude to the Government of Manipur for fulfilling commitments made in the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 6th October 2021. Among the commitments was the establishment of a memorial park in his honor, for which the foundation stone was laid by then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on the day of his funeral.
Today, the Memorial Park stands as a tribute to the late leader and also serves as a space for leisure and harmony for people of all communities residing in the area.
